Court unfreezes Patience Jonathan’s account holding $5.8 million

A Federal High Court in Lagos on Thursday issued an order unfreezing the Skye Bank account of a former First Lady, Patience Jonathan.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, had in November 2016 filed an application before the court, seeking an order freezing the account.
The commission had contended that the funds were reasonably suspected to be proceeds of crime.
The account is said to harbour the sum of $5.8 million.
On Thursday at the resumed hearing of the case, the court issued an order unfreezing the account following an application filed and argued before the court by her lawyer, Ifedayo Adedipe, who led a team of lawyers.
Mr. Adedipe, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, had urged the court to unfreeze Mrs. Jonathan’s account on the grounds that she was not a party in the suit leading to the freezing order.
Citing judicial authorities, Mr. Adedipe contended that the suit was an abuse of court process as the court had no jurisdiction to make an order against one who is not a party in a suit filed before the court.
In her ruling, Justice Mojisola Olatoregun upheld the submissions of Mr. Adedipe and consequently, discharged the order freezing the account.
Also affected by the said order are five companies and one Esther Oba said to be having a total sum of N7.4 billion in six different banks.
In a supporting affidavit sworn to by Abdulahi Tukur, an investigating officer of EFCC, he had averred that there was an urgent need for the court to direct a forfeiture of the sum.
He also averred that it was to prevent a dissipation of the funds sought to be forfeited.
Other companies affected by the order are Finchley Top Homes Ltd, Aribawa Aruera, Magel resort Ltd, AM -PM Global Network Ltd, Pansy Oil and Gas Ltd, and Pagmat oil and Gas Ltd.
Finchely Top Homes Ltd was said to have a current account credit balance of about N226 million and a fixed deposit with a balance of N1 billion.
While issuing the interim order, the court had ordered the EFCC to file an undertaking as to damages if the order is found not to have been made.

Former US President John F. Kennedy's original oil painting from 1955 was sold at Heritage Auctions' Americana & Political Memorabilia auction Saturday for $162,500. The artwork was signed by JFK himself and hung in the Hickory Hill home of Robert F. Kennedy for years.

However, current US president, Donald J. Trump's drawing of New York city skyline didn't do as well as the Kennedys at the auction.

It sold for a respectable $20,000, which isn't that bad. Trump's drawing was donated to a charity in 2005.

'You have signed your death warrant' - Throwback to a shocking 2016 report by Amnesty International on SARS

The complaints about the operations of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), a special branch of the Nigeria police created to fight violent crime didn't just start today, Its been a topic of discussion and cause of worry for many Nigerians especially youths for a long time.

In this extremely detailed report done in September 2016 by Amnesty International, they described SARS as being responsible for widespread torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment (other ill-treatment) of detainees in their custody.

Amnesty International’s research shows that detainees, both men and women, are subjected to various methods of torture and ill- treatment in order to extract information and “confessions”. Such methods include severe beating, hanging, starvation, shooting in the legs, mock executions and threats of execution.

In conclusion, Amnesty International said it found numerous credible allegations that Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) officers continue to perpetrate acts of torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment against detainees in their custody on a regular basis. Human rights defenders and lawyers informed Amnesty International that many police officers cited by victims as being involved in the torture or ill-treatment of suspects were found to have been transferred to another station.

Constitutional and legal safeguards to prevent torture and other ill-treatment in police custody are often ignored. Nigerian police internal mechanisms are weak and inadequate to stop torture being used or to punish perpetrators Amnesty International calls on the Nigerian authorities to reverse this cycle of human rights violations, impunity and corruption by SARS officers by putting respect for and protection of human rights first in the reform of the Nigerian police.

Amnesty International acknowledges the challenge faced by the Nigerian security forces in addressing the rise in violent crime in Nigeria, but does not accept the means being used to counter such crimes.

Valentine's Day History

Valentine's Day History

PAGAN FESTIVALS, CHRISTIAN SAINTS, CHAUCER'S LOVE BIRDS, AND THE GREETING CARD ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA

Roman Roots

The history of Valentine's Day is obscure, and further clouded by various fanciful legends. The holiday's roots are in the ancient Roman festival of Lupercalia, a fertility celebration commemorated annually on February 15. Pope Gelasius I recast this pagan festival as a Christian feast day circa 496, declaring February 14 to be St. Valentine's Day.

Valentines Galore

Which St. Valentine this early pope intended to honor remains a mystery: according to the Catholic Encyclopedia, there were at least three early Christian saints by that name. One was a priest in Rome, another a bishop in Terni, and of a third St. Valentine almost nothing is known except that he met his end in Africa. Rather astonishingly, all three Valentines were said to have been martyred on Feb. 14.
Most scholars believe that the St. Valentine of the holiday was a priest who attracted the disfavor of Roman emperor Claudius II around 270. At this stage, the factual ends and the mythic begins. According to one legend, Claudius II had prohibited marriage for young men, claiming that bachelors made better soldiers. Valentine continued to secretly perform marriage ceremonies but was eventually apprehended by the Romans and put to death. Another legend has it that Valentine, imprisoned by Claudius, fell in love with the daughter of his jailer. Before he was executed, he allegedly sent her a letter signed "from your Valentine." Probably the most plausible story surrounding St. Valentine is one not focused on Eros (passionate love) but on agape (Christian love): he was martyred for refusing to renounce his religion.
In 1969, the Catholic Church revised its liturgical calendar, removing the feast days of saints whose historical origins were questionable. St. Valentine was one of the casualties.

Chaucer's Love Birds

It was not until the 14th century that this Christian feast day became definitively associated with love. According to UCLA medieval scholar Henry Ansgar Kelly, author of Chaucer and the Cult of Saint Valentine, it was Chaucer who first linked St. Valentine's Day with romance.
In 1381, Chaucer composed a poem in honor of the engagement between England's Richard II and Anne of Bohemia. As was the poetic tradition, Chaucer associated the occasion with a feast day. In "The Parliament of Fowls," the royal engagement, the mating season of birds, and St. Valentine's Day are linked:
For this was on St. Valentine's Day,
When every fowl cometh there to choose his mate.

Tradition of Valentine's Cards

Flower
Over the centuries, the holiday evolved, and by the 18th century, gift-giving and exchanging handmade cards on Valentine's Day had become common in England. Hand-made valentine cards made of lace, ribbons, and featuring cupids and hearts eventually spread to the American colonies. The tradition of Valentine's cards did not become widespread in the United States, however, until the 1850s, when Esther A. Howland, a Mount Holyoke graduate and native of Worcester, Mass., began mass-producing them. Today, of course, the holiday has become a booming commercial success. According to the Greeting Card Association, 25% of all cards sent each year are valentines.

Valentine's Day 2017: History And Reason Behind It's Celebration

Valentine's Day 2017: History And Reason Behind It's Celebration

Every February 14, people across the world exchange candy, flowers and gifts with their loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. It is considered to the best day to express your love and care for your special one or even express your feelings to the one you love. But do they really know the history behind this day? Here is how it started:

According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, there were at least three early Christian saints by that name. One was a priest in Rome, another a bishop in Terni, and the third, St. Valentine which almost nothing is known about, except that he met his end in Africa. Astonishingly, all the three Valentines were said to have been martyred on February 14.

Valentine who was a priest, served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine felt this was unfair so he celebrated marriages in secret. When the emperor found out he was thrown in jail and sentenced to death.

It wasn't until more than 200 years later that 14 February was proclaimed St Valentine's Day. By this time Rome had become Christian and the Catholic Church was determined to stamp out any remaining paganism. A pagan fertility ritual was held in February each year and the Pope abolished this festival and proclaimed 14 February Saint Valentine's Day, thus establishing this feast day on the Catholic Calendar of Saints.

NNPC, Nigerian Police pledge collaboration to tackle attacks on Oil & Gas facilities

NNPC, Nigerian Police pledge collaboration to tackle attacks on Oil & Gas facilities
The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and Nigeria Police Force (NPF) have pledged to work more closely together to curb the attacks on oil and gas facilities across the country by militants and others.

The two agencies made this commitment this week when the Group Managing Director of NNPC, Dr Maikanti Baru, visited the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Ibrahim Idris, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

Baru drew the attention of the police to the growing insecurity around oil and gas facilities with the latest being the attack by the Niger Delta Avengers on the Chevron gas pipeline in Delta State. The GMD explained that the attacks on oil and gas facilities are taking a toll on the national budget with massive shortfalls in revenue as well huge losses in petroleum products, environmental degradation, refineries shutdown and loss of lives.

He called on the police boss to deploy police personnel to all oil and gas facilities, adding that the corporation was ready to provide whatever support that is needed for enhanced security.

The IGP, on his part, stated that the police was working on a number of strategies to build capacity for effective policing of the difficult terrain where some of the oil and gas facilities are located.
